Rowan Blackwell is an English wildlife artist whose work is defined by closeness: the direct gaze of a lion, the quiet authority of a leopard and the extraordinary physical presence of the natural world. His portraits remove the visual distance between viewer and subject.

Rather than treating animals as part of a wider landscape, Blackwell presents them as individuals. Stillness, character and eye contact are central to his approach.
