Rowan Blackwell is an English fine artist whose work is defined by closeness: the direct gaze of a lion, the quiet authority of a leopard and the extraordinary physical presence of the natural world. Created through patient fieldwork in Africa and other remote landscapes, his portraits remove the visual distance between viewer and subject.

Rather than treating animals as part of a wider landscape, Blackwell presents them as individuals. Stillness, character and eye contact are central to his approach.
